GAUGE:
16 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Snowflake pattern worked in the rnd with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle to make a new stitch. Knit this new stitch through the back loop.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together – 1 st decreased.
PATTERN STITCHES
K2, p1 Rib (worked in the rnd)
Rnd 1: *K2, p1; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p1 Rib.
Snowflake Pattern (worked in the rnd)
Rnd 1: *With A, k1, with B k1; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: With A, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: *With B, k1, with A k1; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: With A, k to end of rnd.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Snowflake pattern.
NOTES:
Mittens are worked in Fair Isle style colorwork. Carry color not in use across WS of work.
MITTEN (make 2)
With smaller needles and A, cast on 33 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work in K2, p1 Rib until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg.
Change to larger needles.
Next (Inc) Rnd: K1, M1, k to end of rnd – 34 sts at end of rnd.
Work 3 rnds in Snowflake pattern.
Thumb Gusset
Next (Inc) Rnd: K1, place marker (pm), M1, k1, M1, k1, pm, k to end of rnd – 36 sts at end of rnd, including 4 sts between markers.
Work one rnd even in Snowflake pattern.
Next (Inc) Rnd: K1, slip marker (sm), M1, k to 1 st before next marker, M1, k1, sm, k to end of rnd – 38 sts at end of rnd, including 6 sts between markers.
Rep last 2 rnds 2 more times – 42 sts at end of rnd, including 10 sts between markers Work 3 rnds even in Snowflake pattern.
Next Rnd: K1, remove marker, slip next 10 sts to holder, remove marker, cast on 4 sts over gap, k to end of rnd – 36 sts at end of rnd.
Hand
Continue on 36 sts of last rnd only, work 11 rnds in Snowflake pattern.
Next Rnd: K18, pm, k to end of rnd.
Shape Top
Continue in Snowflake pattern and shape top as follows:
Next (Dec) Rnd: Ssk, k to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, ssk, k to 2 sts before end of rnd, k2tog – 32 sts at end of rnd.
Work 1 rnd even.
Rep last 2 rnds 2 more times – 24 sts when all decs complete.
Next (Dec) Rnd: (Ssk) twice, k to 4 sts before marker, (k2tog) twice, sm, (ssk) twice, k to 4 sts before end of rnd, (k2tog) twice – 16 sts at end of rnd.
Next (Dec) Rnd: (Ssk) twice, (k2tog) twice, sm, (ssk) twice, (k2tog) twice – 8 sts at end of rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, pull tightly tog, and fasten off.
Thumb
Divide sts from holder onto 3 needles. With A, k10 sts, pick up and k 4 sts along edge of hand – 14 sts. Join, place marker for beg of rnd.
Work 6 rnds even in Snowflake pattern.
Continue in Snowflake pattern and shape thumb as follows:
Next (Dec) Rnd: K2, *ssk, k2tog, K2; rep from * once – 10 sts at end of rnd.
Work 1 rnd even in Snowflake pattern.
Next (Dec) Rnd: K3, ssk, k1, k2tog, k2 – 8 sts at end of rnd.
Next (Dec) Rnd: (K2tog) 4 times – 4 sts at end of rnd.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, pull tightly tog, and fasten off.
FINISHING
